Journey Appreciation

The journey toward independence for neurodivergent individuals is anything but linear. It twists and turns, shifting with each new challenge and triumph. Communication, education, and daily life don’t unfold in a predictable pattern—progress isn’t a single, defined path; it's a landscape of growth in many forms. Some days there are breakthroughs; other days call for patience and recalibration. Recognizing that progress isn’t about fitting into a standard mold, that it is about finding what works best in each moment, is key to appreciating the journey.

The journey isn’t walked alone. The people supporting us—parents, siblings, extended family, educators, and therapists—travel their own paths alongside us. While providing support, they have to reshape their understanding of the world, unlearning what they’ve always known as true and relearning every small factor. They learn to let go of teachings rooted in conventional norms and instead think outside the box in search of new ways to help us develop skills. This process isn’t easy, but it fosters deeper connections and a more profound understanding of our individual strengths and needs.

Each step, whether forward, backward, or sideways, carries its own lessons. There is just as much value in the moments of struggle as in the victories. Every experience—new communication tools, adaptations to daily routines, realization of personal limits, and so on—has insight to offer. Learning when to push forward and when to pause is an essential skill, not a setback. Growth is gaining skills and also recognizing when to rest and respect the boundaries your body has set for you.

Ultimately, embracing the journey means appreciating each day as it comes. Some days are easier than others, and that’s okay. There’s beauty in being in tune with yourself, knowing, adapting to, and honoring your limits. Celebrate progress in all of its unique forms. When we release rigid self-expectations and instead focus on the experiences themselves, we give way to authentic, fulfilling, and deeply meaningful personal growth.

Love this, Arjun. One thing I’ve learned from you and Swarit in this journey is that there’s always a way to recalibrate. It’s a painfully nonlinear process, yet somehow, each twist teaches us to trust more deeply.

Awesome, linearity makes things predictable. It can at best create an unidimensional life story. The non linearity creates a landscape as you said with the beauty of huge peaks and valleys and lush green memories of achievement. A very positive attitude to life enjoying the scenery as you journey past every possible ways! Great arjun

Arjun, your words beautifully capture the nonlinear, deeply personal nature of growth. True progress lies in the struggles, the triumphs, and the quiet resilience in between. Your reflections remind us that the journey itself, with all its detours, holds the richest lessons. March on!

Such a profound thought arjun! “Focus on the experiences themselves” This is something I’m still trying to learn even now. To be truly present in each moment.
